Understanding the Needs of Youth Experiencing Depression

During this introductory training, participants will have an overview of depression as it relates to youth. The training will provide a brief overview on the causes of depression and what possible symptoms are for youth. Participants will gain practical skills to assess, respond to, and support a youth who is experiencing depression symptoms. By attending this training, participants will engage in a collaborative discussion regarding common services and support for parents and caregivers of youth who are experiencing depression. This training will support service providers with an understanding of how depression shows up for a youth as it relates to their mood, physically, and cognitively. The material will be delivered by PowerPoint presentation, short video clips, group discussion, breakout (small group) discussions and participant workbook (handout).
Foster Youth Bill of Rights

The Foster Youth Bill of Rights (FYBoR) was created due to the advocacy of youth in care, and its purpose is to protect children and youth in foster care, youth on probation and in out-of-home placement, and children living in any licensed or certified children’s facility or home in California. Participants will learn about the role, functions, limitations and the laws that govern the California Office of the Foster Care Ombudsperson (OFCO); learn about the OFCO Complaint Process; learn about the California Foster Youth Bill of Rights; and learn about how to identity potential foster youth rights violations and uphold the rights.

Explore and learn the many forms of domestic violence and how it impacts children and families including age-specific indicators, trauma, and the brain, and best practices for providers and how you can make a difference in your CASA Role.
Counter Transference and Self Awareness

This training – offered by SF CASA – will discuss counter transference, a term Freud founded, and how it can both positively and negatively impact our work as providers. Discussed will be the many environmental and social stressors we are facing today, this includes the COVID-19 pandemic and the racism pandemic, which will impact us in various ways. As a CASA, in hearing the losses and hardships of your youth, one is often triggered, especially in these difficult times. Explore the importance of your own self-awareness to best guarantee one can remain effective as a provider. Learn ways to cultivate self-awareness and the importance of our own boundaries. Review the importance of self-care and barriers that can lead to burnout and vicarious trauma.
